Recently I had the opportunity to #experience my first girls #cruise trip. It was my first time on a ship, and let me just say, hell yeah I was nervous. BUT! I had an amazing time.
Before booking this trip, I heard from many people that the ship cabins were too small, bathrooms wasn’t #accessible, and the Islands you travel to may or not be accessible. This is where I believe, those with #physical disabilities should do their research if they want to travel.
Before the days neared, I assured the cruise line that I will be traveling with my #electric #wheelchair. Those who truly know me, knows that I #value my independence. Therefore, I don’t like being pushed. Why must I have to stay where others parked me??? Nah! Thank you, next!... So I called the cruise line and requested for #accessibility. What the cruise line was able to provide me with was an accessible #shuttle from the #airport to the ship and back, which cost about $36 for a round trip. The ship provided us a pretty decent size cabin. I mean, i was able to do a whole 360 around the room. That view from the balcony was #beautiful! The bathroom, were so fully accessible. There was a high rise tub and a shower with a bench. Absolutely loved it! Accessible cabin cost roughly $100 more, but it was so worth it!
The cruise ship my sister, my girlfriends and I traveled on was #Carnival #Victory. Although most place on the ship was wheelchair accessible, some weren’t. For instance, the #pools and #jacuzzi”s were not accessible. I wasn’t planning on missing out on the pool! I love the water! I’m a #mermaid, so my sister and our girlfriends carried me into and out of the #water. Other than that, everything else was pretty accessible and the staff was amazing! Kept us alive and making sure we were having a great time. I love me my #director, Felipe!
The #Islands we traveled to were #Key #West #Florida and #Cozumel #Mexico. In Key West, when we got off the ship, the staff made sure we were provided with a accessible shuttle to the #tourist area and that was totally #free! There in Key West we went to the #aquarium. Where we feed #sharks and ate a #conch after touching one. I love gross stuff like that😛
Mexico was my #favorite. It was where I was most terrified to go. Prior to our trip, we book a day #resort where we spent our time in Mexico at. What I was unsure of was accessibility. How was I supposed to get to my #destination and back with my electric wheelchair? The resort guided me to the #taxi service that all the tourist take at the port. They suggested I contact a man name Jose Trejo Paredes. I guess he’s the man you request for an accessible vehicle because when we arrived at the port, the taxi managers asked if I contacted Mr. Paredes and they all knew who he was. On our way to the resort I was nervous. I kept repeatedly asking him if he was going to return to pick us up to head back to the ship. My sister and girlfriends laughed every time! At 5pm, when it was time to head back, he returned right on time. I was ecstatic!
During our time in #Cozumel #Mexico, we went to #MrSanchos! For just $55 you can eat and drink all you want. No limit! There was #activities to do there, which cost $20 more. Although this resort wasn’t completely accessible, for they did have one wheelchair for the sand, but there wasn’t any for the beach or pool. The staff was #determined. They made sure I was included in every activity. Providing me with a water bed, which was $10 and they carried me into and out of the water.
It was truly an amazing trip! I would #recommend everyone with a #physical #disability to try. It’s one #life, why repeat the same day twice, when you can experience everything this #world has to offer!
